May 22, 2017

Owned by Nespars, Multichoice Africa is Africa’s largest video entertainment and internet company with a strong presence in South Africa and across the African continent. The company owns the popular pay TV service called DStv.

According to MyBroadband, MTN is in discussions regarding a potential acquisition of MultiChoice Africa. Based in Dubai, MultiChoice Africa was founded in 1996 and offers numerous entertainment services, including DStv, Box Office, Catch Up, DStv Now. This comes as a result of MTN pointing out its plans to venture into Smartphone streaming services. The demand for online has been growing during the few recent years with pressure from services like Netflix and the now Youtube.

However, MyBroadband asked MTN about the discussions, but declined to comment. MultiChoice and Naspers sidestepped the question on the potential sale, and instead confirmed it is in discussions regarding a content supply agreement with MTN.
